Bananas, beans and butter.

Recently, life has been somewhat busy; there have been trips away - some for pleasure, others for business - meetings to attend, family occasions, commitments to meet, you get the picture!

Arriving home after a long drive, we were hungry, but too tired to want to cook anything much; “Let’s have beans on toast”. Oh dear, no baked beans in the cupboard.

Next morning a banana was asked for at breakfast time; Oh dear, no bananas!

“Never mind, I’ll just have butter on my toast.” Oh dear, very little butter!

That afternoon I was able to go to our local supermarket where I bought Beans, Bananas and Butter, and more besides.

But, that got me thinking about my ‘spiritual store cupboard’; do I make sure there is always plenty, not only for my own spiritual nourishment, but also for the good of others?

We replenish our spiritual store cupboards through prayer, Bible reading, conversations with Christian friends, among other ways. There are times when we are very busy and perhaps don’t have time (or energy) for deep Bible study, or long prayer times but, if we neglect these practices for too long, we may reach a time when the metaphorical cupboard is bare.

God’s ‘supermarket’ never closes, He only stocks the very best of ingredients, lovingly created to give us all we need; there are hearty meals (Bible study, In-depth prayer times, good Christian teaching) and refreshing drinks (meditation on a Bible Verse, a word of encouragement from a friend, a memorable phrase from a sermon) and also sweet snacks (those times when your heart overflows with praise and adoration).

And the very best bit is that everything is free.

Let’s keep our spiritual store cupboards well stocked and liberally share the Lord Jesus with friends, family and others we meet along the way.

“Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven ….for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also..” Matthew 6:20-21
